Not All Is What You Plan

The plans of life often take a constant detour. Life is one giant detour for some of us. All the planning in the world can leave us unprepared.

Okay, I have all of the quippy sage advice out of the way … life sucks. I won’t sugar coat this, I’m no Mary Poppins. For many, like myself, 2016 has been universally awful. Sure, some years just seem gross. The kind of gross that leaves you feeling icky until you bathe. Not 2016. Its stink permeatesĀ the very fabric of life. We are going to be smelling this for awhile. The loss of so many greats hit the heart strings and the election left us with a bad taste in our mouth. It wasn’t just that, this year has left many scraping by. People who are planners. Many of us who rely on our plans to sustain our lifestyle. It’s not that we didn’t work hard, it was a series of quite unfortunate events that started a chain reaction.

For me, the dominos began to fall after a car accident I had back in February. They’ve continued to fall. The silver lining is that school is going well and that’s what I hold on to. It’s been a great decision in my life, to go back and finish my degree. Even with that, I came to the realization that Journalism was not my destiny. My true calling is history. Not just having a shiny History degree, but actually becoming a teacher. So, with a new sense of purpose, I changed my major and began my journey towards the road to being an underpaid and underappreciated educator.

I know it’s too soon for sour grapes, but the reality is – TEACHING IS NOT A MONEY MAKING OCCUPATION. There are no two ways about it, teachers are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. That is all fine and dandy with me. I want to make a difference in the world. Even in my own way, I do what I can to make it a better place. Teaching will allow me to instill the importance of history in our society and culture. If we do not learn from those who came before, we are doomed to repeat. That has been more apparent this year than any other.

This new direction in life suits me. It suits my authorial focus and research of Victorian Paranormal and Occult. It suits who I am.

It’s a detour that I am happy to take.

So, next time you are struggling with detours and worried that life isn’t going according to plan just take a deep breath and remember that life is what you make it and sometimes it isn’t always what you plan.

Happy impending New Year to you all.
